Well, it doesn't mean I've been out of the game. In a matter of fact, I've had a lot happen locally in and around the game of Go while not having written about it so much. Sorry about the inactivity. I'll promise to try keep at it more from now on. Since I created the Steemit connection, it might even prove more fun.

Anyway, on with the story...

As the title suggests, five years back Today, on Tuesday 7th of February in 2012, our club (spearheaded by yours truly) officially opened its doors at Koulutuskeskus Salpaus' Culture Centre. From the get-go we had almost 10 participants, and while we've eventually had to move out from the school premises, and occasionally to change our meeting times, we've gladly stayed alive all that time. The faces and places might've changed, but we kept on playing. And quite frankly, we've managed to pull almost spotless record of weekly games.

To top this all, we've even hosted two Summer Go tournaments! Whee!

For this, we are now enjoying festivities and some treats for a job well done next Saturday. We are gathering to the clubhouse of our apartment buiding, bringing our kids along, order pizza and refreshers and spend the day having fun, playing games, discussion and mingle. And my wife Vera promised to bake us a cake. I am positive it'll turn out to be a fun day.

Yep, that's all for today. I had hoped I could had added pics here, but didn't have any accessible today, because I have recently had an UTF-8 breakdown on my harddrive and the OS won't let me access those directories, so this will have to do. Sorry about that... I'll add pictures later then.

---

P.s. We are on lookout for new players.

If you would like to come play with us, please meet us weekly on Wednesdays starting at 17:00. We play at the Bar Hiidenkivi on Ratakatu 28, Lahti.

P.p.s. I'm now 7 kyu. (Hoping to be <strike>6kyu</strike> 1dan really soon.

P.p.p.s. Follow us on Twitter @ WimGoban. I'll be possibly be adding some new links to the sidebar soon.
I've recently joined a blogchain network Steem, through a site called Steemit. It's a network built on a blockchain, like the Bitcoin currency. Steem rewards its users for posts by giving out its own cryptocurrency for highly voted content.

So... To make things easier for myself I have now connected the World is my Goban blog to Steem through Streemian (another Steem service) so that all my Go blog posts get automatically syndicated to my Steem(it) feed. Now isn't that fancy?

Good. Now that I've got the financial stuff handled, I might as well start blogging about Go again. I think before the weekend I'll have something up. So be seeing ya with another post then.

You can click the picture and visit my Flickr album to see all my other photos. Not much more to report this time. I've been a bit busy with my kids having started their fall semester and all those other activities that go with it. I'll probably need to start planning for Miro's 5 year birthday parties too.

Oh, and I'm now established as 7 kyu EGF. Cool. It took a while, but I guess I can do better. Next step 6 kyu.

(Embedding images from Flickr is a pain, anyone know how to easily add them?)

I haven't been writing for a couple of days, because I've been trying to get over a summer flu or heyfever or something that's been clogging up my sinuses lately, and also trying to prepare myself for the tournament we are hosting tomorrow. It's going to be an early wake up so I'll be hitting the bed quite soon now. It wouldn't do to play tired, after all.

Just sayin' I'm so going to get beaten this time, being a mere 7 kyu or whatever, going up against some 1 to 3 dan players.

Wish me luck! :)

I have very little time now before going to bed, but I just had to link to the video. The game was very exciting, and while I am dead tired, I just couldn't take my eyes off the screen. If you were wondering, Takemiya is the one who plays the "cosmic style". The video is subtitled in English, not sure if they work in embedded videos or not, but if not, you can always go directly to YouTube and watch it there.
I hope you liked it as much as I did. These guys really make the game look simple, and by listening the commentators you can learn a good deal of new tricks.

Good night, and have good games, as always!
25th July, is the name day of Jaakko (Jaakonpäivä, illustration from Google doodles). (From Wikipedia:) According to an old Finnish legend, Jaakko throws a cold stone in the waters on 25th of July, on his name day, symbolically freeing himself of the burden of sins. (Which in turn refers to the religious myths of St. James' Road to Santiago.)

The myth of Jaakko and the cold stone was believed to be the reason for the cooling of waters, and generally marked the end of mid-Summer and nearing of Autumn.

Cold stones, indeed... We actually think they need warming up. So...

After a short planning session with a friend from our club, we decided to host a small one day flash tournament of our own, a week and a half from now, on the Saturday 25th of July. We've also reserved a cabinet with some tables from a local cafeteria.

This will be exciting. We haven't had any tournaments of our own yet, and since our club is a relatively new one, and in a relatively non-typical town for go, it might eventually spark some extra interest towards us. As we are not yet official, the tournament is merely "just for fun", but we can expect to see quality games just as likely.

The tournament will start at 10:00 in the morning, and will end at 18:00, there will be four rounds and a lunch break. It'll be a EGF Class C MacMahon handicap tournament with Japanese rules, although I am not proficient enough to translate the handicap system here, so I'll skip the technicals. Sorry about that. The timing of each game will be a 25 minutes maintime + a Canadian Byo-Yomi of 25 moves / 3 minutes.

We haven't actually decided on the prices yet, but we'll definitely be discussing that over at our next game night, I presume.

After the tournament, the participants and spectators can come relax with us over a pint at the docks.

So, how about that? We are definitely making progress here. And I'm very excited to see who will attend and if how it affects our own club's image and popularity in the future.

It's fun, because on 23rd, like I mentioned in a previous blog post, we'll most likely also be attending the NGA tournament in Espoo.

Btw. sorry about the linked tournament information being in Finnish only, as I couldn't find relevant linkable info for the NGA tournament in English, and ours is actually only written in Finnish. Since the tournament is a small local tournament we didn't really have the need to translate it. But if we manage to pull this one off, we might very well be inclined to push and grow it next year.

So, without a furder ado, I'll bid thee farewell again, and wish you many very interesting and fun games, until next time. See ya!
Here they talk about the last public game of the Meijin, Honinbo Shuhei 9p which he played against Kitani Minoru 7p. A fine example of true dedication in the game. A must watch for anyone who likes Go. Go ahead and watch it if you have the time!

Thanks for xhu98 and theduddha2 for reviewing this one, it was an inspirational game, and good work with the review too. I loved the Go Seigen remarks too.

If you have watched it, tell us what you thought of the game. Was it as inspirational for you as it was for me, or did you think players from a century back were actually worse than today's pro's and didn't know how to play worth 1 kyu? :)

But now I'm about to have a moment and watch some Miss Phryne Fishers Murder Mysteries before going to bed. I have to admit I've been a bit addicted to mystery shows lately.

As always, have fun with your games! See ya!
He seems to enjoy coming there and even played one game, slowly. (I'm puzzled if the old Batman re-runs that can be seen on the big screen there have something to do with his apparent enthusiasm though.)

Well, I played two games myself, first against our 1 dan with 7 stones handicap, and the second game against our 3 dan with 8 stones, both of them I lost. Well, I think I should just study more.

Lately I've been doing tsumegos on my phone using the Gobandroid app. While I can't say I've been doing any progress, I'm confident doing them daily will eventually boost my games. If only I can remember to do them daily that is.

We decided that if the weather so allows, we'll be playing in the Lahti boat harbour next week. It's an awesome place when the weather is good.

There was also some talk of an upcoming Nordic Go Academy Summer Camp 2015 in Espoo on 17th to 24th July. Mainly about attending the tournament on 23rd.

I'd like to attend the whole camp, though concerning my financial state at the moment, I might have to pass on that one. Currently the fee of 200 € plus travel seems a bit overkill for me. I might even end up having to take Leo with me if I decided to go for a whole week.

Alas we already had some other plans for the starter weekend of the camp, so it's kind of pointless to ponder over the possibility to attend it all, but since the actual tournament is open to everyone, it'd be nice to take part in that.

Looks like attending the tournament costs 30 €. A bit hefty, but I guess I could scrape something up for that date.

Anyway it's getting late now, so as always, have nice games!

Update: Decided not to this year, after all, we are having our own little tournament next weekend, and I've been feeling somewhat under the weather for a week now. Hoping to get better before Saturday though.

A trend of non-productivity, especially in blogs about Go. Most of the go blogs I used to read, are now dead or inactive. That is a bit sad.

After all, no matter how good a game is, I think it is beneficial to the game and the gaming community as a whole, if someone keeps actively advertising the game they like to play.

Of course, it may be that all the attention lately has centered around some strong YouTube Go streamers. Which I guess is good, but like videblogging, it also seems to take a lot of interest away from the original blogosphere.

One possible thing to revive the blogging scene is to learn to combine the two areas. So I'm heavily pondering about the idea of making some elementary go videos (for Finns, with English subs or vice versa) and linking them here.

Today is Thursday, which means we have a club meeting today. So as I attend the club tonight, I'm going to bring up advertising again. We definitely need new members, because some of our old members are moving away. Of course we have some faithful "old farts" who couldn't even think of quitting, but it'd still be nice if we had some new people come in every now and then.

But now, I must go outside with the kids. The sun finally showed up. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14008282539099811016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2010218220024259085.post-78469463079373321652015-07-09T13:15:00.000+03:002015-07-09T13:15:29.038+03:00Parenting and go.Improving one's skill is a gradual progress. No one is born a master, and while some definitely have the capability to learn faster, it certainly doesn't mean the rest of us couldn't learn the same things, or that the fast learner didn't put in any effort in what they learned. Even prodigies like Mozart had to spend time and effort into learning their trait.

What am I getting to?

Well, my son Leo is having a hard time with himself not learning some of the basics of go. He really likes the game, but making those same simple mistakes in every game, he is quickly becoming put off by it, and I fear he might want to give up even trying to. I see his progress, but he doesn't (want to) believe me when I compliment him for his moves or skills. Quite opposite... His reaction is usually very confrontative, like I had blamed him for something. This is something I am personally not able to understand.

So how is it the other kids I've been showing the game to can withstand me beating them on the board day in day out, thanking me for it in the end, and my own son throws a tantrum if I so much as don't let him kill one of my groups while he's winning?

I might be using the wrong strategy in teaching him. Or maybe Leo truly isn't motivated in go after all. Maybe I should give him slack and try to get him interested in other things. What do you think?

Anyway, in my own view, Leo lacks the tenacity to keep motivated towards all new things. I have no idea where it stems from, but I find me blaming myself over it. I might not be the ideal parent, whatever that means...

Well. Right now, Leo is playing a slower game against me on OGS, and he agreed to play a live game online every now and then (I suggested him to play daily, but I'm not sure if he's willing to.) He's not really a 17 kyu yet, but that's how OGS has rated him after having played, being so miserable I had to give some advice every now and then just to shut him up. (He's very loud when he thinks he's playing badly.)

It was completely different when he played in our club against an adult who wasn't me. Maybe that is the key. He might need someone else to play against. Playing on the Internet is fine, but he probably doesn't see the need to play cool and handle his disappointment, because his opponent doesn't actually see him.

And how does Miro fare with go?

Miro doesn't really understand the basics yet, but emulates my play very well. Even he doesn't like if kill one of his stones, or if he can't kill mine. Very much like Leo, but there's something of a promise there, because he doesn't throw a tantrum every time something "bad" happens on the board.

I somehow managed to get Miro hooked playing the snapback pack on Gochild. He likes the colored stones. In my mind I vision Leo being the inspiration for him later to start learning go too. If for nothing more than playing a game against each other every now and then.

Myself, I was lately on fire, winning almost every game on DGS, finally cementing my 7 kyu rank (hopefully). Kicking up a gear, I challenged a couple of 4 kyu players to a game. I don't think I may win them just yet, but I am confident I can give'em a good game though.

Some statistics I got from the Dragon Go Server (screencapped from AnDGS):

I think that's pretty cool.

I'm also playing on OGS, although last time I checked, my ratings there were still provisional.

Well I'm still hoping my boys will get better, and more interested in playing go than they now are. It doesn't help we can't play in in the park with their friends, because it's been raining a few days in a row now.

In other news, I set up a bunch of accounts on Twitter, G+ and YouTube in support to this blog. And if possible, I might do some videos too. Although I am not sure whether to create stuff in English or in Finnish because my English kind of sucks, and there aren't that many Go videobloggers in Finland. (Also, the thought of giving a video link to Leo's go playing friends is an exciting one.)

But, all that said... Everyone have a nice Thursday, and good luck in your games!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14008282539099811016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2010218220024259085.post-36017984974842225612015-07-02T23:05:00.000+03:002015-07-02T23:07:32.179+03:00Normal club night.Since the bar owner doesn't seem to mind it, I took Leo to play some games and drink lemonade at the club today. There were three regular members attending tonight. Pretty normal, down a bit from our heyday, but enough to make a game.

Leo got to play two games on the 13x13 board, against a 1dan, and me. He did lose to our friend with 13 stone handi by 12 points, but managed to beat me with 9 stones by resignation. So... I Finally got to see some real determination in his play!

It was fun to watch him play too, especially when he got on fire in the mid game, and sped up his play. He later regretted it though, because he ended up killing a group of his own, which might not have happened had he thought his moves a bit. But I think it's a good start. He did manage to 'see something' to pursue after all, and went after it with all he got. A good start!

I can't say I was playing well today. Maybe I was just tired. Lost with twenty-something points on the big board, and lost to Leo by resigning, after discussing a group that was on the verge of death.

Hope your games have gone better. See ya, and play well! Good night!

p.s. I tried to remember how the games went to replay them here, but looks like my tired mind just isn't capable of remembering them anymore. So I'm going to skip that one and take a rest now.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14008282539099811016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2010218220024259085.post-33424239104558015192015-07-01T12:41:00.001+03:002015-07-01T19:17:28.595+03:00Kids and GoIn my previous blog post, I forgot a lot of what I was supposed to be writing about. Blame time constraints for I'm a father of two lively children. (Yes, Two! I never got around to telling about that either. Oh my.) Leo, whom about you already know if you had read some of the earlier posts, and Miro who was born in September 2010.

They both play Go.

Well. This is not a story about them, actually. It's more of a story of how kids ultimately get interested in stuff like Go.

It starts by a seemingly innocent case of me and Miro (who was 3 years old at the time) playing what was a "just for fun" stone placing game on a 9x9 goban at the park last Summer. I hadn't planned it in advance or anything, just felt like taking the boards out and testing the boys if they were interested in playing some games outside.
Suddenly we were surrounded with small kids, boys and girls, ages from 5 to 10 wanting to know what we were playing, and if we would teach them to play it too.

The rest of the Summer holidays were spent teaching and watching the kids play. Even when their holidays ended, they would still be playing Go after school. Almost every kid in the neighborhood were interested in the game.

I was a bit worried about what should come of their hobby, come Autumn. It'd soon be out of the question to play in the park as the weather gets colder towards Winter. So Leo came up with an idea, they could set up their own Go club, separate of the adults' club I went to every Thursday, as they could probably play in the club room of our apartment building.
It was the starting point of the kids' go club which was sort of a success story.

I even had to get the key for the club room so we don't have to ask for it each time we used it. My wife Vera, was kind enough to occasionally bake some goodies for the kids to snack on when taking a break between games. It was fun times for everyone.

But since there were a lot fewer kids there than in the park by Summer, some of them eventually started losing interest in coming to the club. And by Christmas, it was evident, that the club activities had to cease. Leo wasn't able to convince his friends to play at the club. So after New Years' we had to put it on hiatus for the rest of the Spring.

Now. As the weather has finally gotten warmer (as we had a long, cold and wet Spring), I've been taking some goban to the park whenever going out with the kids. But the enthusiasm of last Summer doesn't seem to exist anymore. I am confident though, that if they start playing again, they probably won't stop... After all, there seem to be new kids who have moved into the neighborhood, who might get interested.

What eventually prompted me to write this post was having read a Google+ post by Thomas Rohde. Looks like something I could use. ^^

And like always, have good games everyone!

Update: the post I referred to was actually written in 2013. For some reason I misread it having a more fresh date. Sorry about this. If "Euro Kids" is still active, please give me a shout out. Maybe we can push go further for all kids. :)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14008282539099811016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2010218220024259085.post-37945159875516153382015-06-30T09:57:00.000+03:002015-06-30T16:04:13.921+03:00Hello! A bit of status update...A lot has happened between now and then, so I will shortly address something that was, what is, and what will be in this post.

First of all. I never stopped playing Go, while not exactly having the drive to write about it. I've now progressed from the ~12 kyu rank I was back when I made those prototype leather gobans in 2010, to breaking SDK some time in 2013. (Slow progress, huh?) At the moment I'm about 7 kyu, more or less, although not having played fast games unless in the club, still continually playing much slower games in the Dragon Go Server (DGS).

I kinda kickstarted the club by meeting a local 1 dan player in a local bar for games in 2010. After having played with him for about two years, and after having started my artisan studies in design and modeling I took it upon myself to found a club in our school.

In the early 2012 marked the beginning of the very first go club in Lahti. We actually started with a bang, with about 10 members on the first day. And ever since we've been playing regularly every week.
We did eventually have to separate from the school when people started graduating (the school's club rules pretty much prevented me from recruiting members from outside the school), so we moved in to a little pub called Hiidenkivi, played there ever since. The sad thing about that is, not many people under 18 years old who would like to join us can do it.

In Summer of 2013 my mother passed away. Her disease took a toll on me and my studies, so I graduated a year later after having finished writing up the written part of my thesis work. (Built a couple of foldable tatami chairs, called Zaisu. Sadly I haven't got a photo at the moment to show of the finished piece, only a rendering.)

Presently I am in the process of starting a small business of my own. Remember those foldable gobans I mentioned in an earlier post. I decided I will need to do a few more of those, so I picked up some leather sheets from the firm I used to work in. There was a setback though. They had sold off the silk screen press they had at the time, so I'm kind of looking a replacement, either as a service or building/acquiring a vacuum table of my own. The only one I found is kind of expensive (550 €), 130 km away, and looks awfully bad as decoration or furniture for any apartment. (I don't have any other place for it either. So.) But anyway, I think I will need it, if I ever want to get those gobans done.

I've also pondered about the possibility of starting blogging again.

But what comes next, remains to be seen... Have good games everyone!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14008282539099811016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2010218220024259085.post-74194239500721738062013-09-05T14:38:00.002+03:002013-09-05T14:38:37.141+03:00A long time has passed with no update...Life is like that. We do not always live online, and we tend to forget.
I'm happy to report that we now have an active go club in my town.
Still, a busy rest of the day ahead with my kids and the club, so I'll leave with this. I hope I'll be back soon. :)
Good games everyone!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14008282539099811016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2010218220024259085.post-19263621414111602372011-12-12T13:08:00.001+02:002011-12-12T13:21:18.231+02:00Posting from school
Hello!

Looks like I haven't posted anything in a while. Maybe I should start doing so again, so here's an update.

Some interesting news

Last summer I was eventually admitted to a school, and started studying in August. I'm to become a model builder/designer. Here are some of my early school assignments:

Although they do not exactly fit within the context of this blog, I decided to list them here anyway, just to give a glance at what I've been doing with my time lately. Now that that's said, what do you think about the go chair/stool? I designed it with my 5 and 1 year old sons in mind, so it measures about 22 cm high and 30 cm wide. I plan to make two of them, one black and other white (this particular one is built in 1:2 scale). I have yet to decide if I should make the inside into a small training goban, or perhaps carve it into a small compartment for toys.

In another news, I've been on and off playing on the ASR League, I even managed to rise to class Gamma III for a month, to drop to Delta again in the beginning of this one. I've been in a small slump as it is right now, so I decided not to play on the league, unless for keeping myself listed there, for a little while. With only a slight slowness on DGS I've been able to keep up with my ~15 games. All this studying, playing and all the added holiday stuff, stress is already getting to me. And to top it all, I've been working to set up that local go club I've mentioned.

The Go club

It is almost finalised by now, I was contacted by a local 1dan some months ago and we've been playing at a local club (almost) every monday night since. I've also gotten a green light from my school to set up a club here, so I guess by the start of the spring we'll be having an official school club too. Definitely something to wait for, especially if you live in Lahti, Finland!

With these news, I bid you all amazing holiday times, and we'll be seeing with another blog post soon. (I'll just have to arrange the time for it, right?)

See ya! ^^ ggAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14008282539099811016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2010218220024259085.post-6518810184599143662011-01-09T15:38:00.002+02:002011-01-09T23:43:20.723+02:00Guess who joined the ASR League again!Yes! After an excruciating two months of not playing on the league (or even KGS for that matter) I decided it was time for me to join again.
From the start of this year I will be playing in the Epsilon VII class. Starting from the bottom again, but at least I can play again. I wasn't fully satisfied with the slow pace of DGS and frankly felt like there was a hole in my life when I couldn't find time for the league. Also, my KGS rank has apparently drifted from 12k to 9k all on its own. I wonder if my play has improved at all during this time.

I've been playing (and losing) in the league for the couple of past days, but already I feel like I'm learning something new in each game.

I'm totally in awe about the recent growth of the league. <strike>Only</strike> Starting this month there's <strike>been</strike> over 400 <strike>new</strike> members <strike>joining</strike> playing in the league. (Update: Oops! I was a bit too excited there. Fixed now.) I think that's pretty amazing development! It makes it all the more so interesting now because there really are many more motivated players around.

Speaking about motivation, my son Leo has recently become pretty motivated too, he challenges me to a game almost daily, so to keep his enthusiasm going I created him a KGS account so he can play against other people too. I know his skill is still lacking, but he is really making progress. Strength-wise I believe he's somewhere in the 30k - 25k range. It's truly a slow learning for him, but one can't expect a three to four year old be attentive enough to teach them everything at once. Slowly does it. I wonder if his little brother becomes a go player too. (Hmm... To those who were puzzled about Leo's games, yes I did drop him some clues when he was playing. I just couldn't watch him get slaughtered, that's all.)

I've been idling on the leather boards I made before the holidays. Not really progressed much, but I still plan to make the cups for the stones before my trainee period is over, that is before the 25th day of the month.

The Go-club hasn't progressed either, but at least I've now got three potential places where to invite people to play games. Maybe I'll make a small poster with my email ad for those who are interested to contact and put it up on different bulletin boards. Of course if you are living in the Lahti area here in Finland, you might want to send me comments too.

But hmm... I guess I'll go design some cups for the stones which I noticed have to be at least 21.5 mm of diameter to look good on those boards. So I will have to make the cups big enough to fit those bigger stones. I'll be posting pictures when they are ready.

And if you haven't joined the league, do it now! It's really fun! ^^ See ya! /ggAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14008282539099811016noreply@blogger.com1Lahti, Finland60.9825708 25.661640960.899301799999996 25.4281814 61.0658398 25.895100399999997tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2010218220024259085.post-84794245716064169112010-12-17T23:11:00.003+02:002010-12-17T23:22:21.751+02:00An ASR League game reviewed by topazg82.topazg 1d reviewed an October ASR League game between me and Turpa 5k. It's pretty amazing although it does have some sound issues. Here's the review:

Sadly, I'm not playing on ASR League, or KGS for that matter anymore. Not until I get my time issues sorted out. Parenting to two small boys is very time consuming, so I'll have to wait this out, and maybe I can take part in upcoming 2011 ASR Tournament starting February 1st. In the meantime I'll play with the somewhat more relaxed timing modes of the Dragon Go Server. So if you want a game, send me a challenge there! ^^ See you later! /ggAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14008282539099811016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2010218220024259085.post-71138499776925278262010-12-09T23:51:00.001+02:002010-12-09T23:51:51.857+02:00Leather is sexy, especially with polka dots!As I'm working as an intern in a little workshop that prints and binds calendars and presses many different things from many different materials I got an opportunity to use a silk press to print some leather gobans for the go club I plan to set up. Now all I need is some stones.

I used Inkscape to create the print (hint: use Inkscape to view it!) on the leather board, you can download the design and freely use it with your own goban. I printed the board on six transparencies, that I taped together and used as a film to develop a template for the silk press. I was originally going for six goban, but ended up with ten of them.

The leather before being cut. This wasn't the only one.

This was the template used to create the prints on the boards.

The finished boards look actually very nice. Leather is pretty good material for creating something like a portable goban. I'll need to take a picture of one in daylight so it captures the whole beauty of them. Here's one I took with my phone when they were out from print and drying up:

The finished boards. The polka dots really cheer them up.

Actually, these are not the first boards I have made, I also did some smaller practice boards few months ago from plywood, laser printed paper gobans, glue and water.

I was delighted to find out that the kid I had played against last week was totally in for a new game. This time he wanted to play on the 13x13 board. At first we took a quick match of atari-go and he owned me in just a few moves. I thought it would be a good time to start playing for real, so I told him to place the handicap, so he did, all five of them. And the game took off... In the end I kind of messed up the score because there was some distraction, so after I got home, ate dinner and had a beer I decided to recreate the game as an SGF and get it scored right. And here it is:
<strike>Argh. I can't seem to get Eidogo to show the variations. Something wrong with the SGF perhaps. Anyone know what could be the problem here? I posted the SGF on pastebin if someone is able and wants to make corrections. It'd be nice if it worked though. I'm a bit too tired to work on it now because it's already way over midnight here. But hey,</strike> I hope you like the game!

There was this one thing on my mind... Oh yes. I was checking out twitter and my new followers, and I discovered one of them, RazorBrain, has his own blog: RazorBrain's Go Journal. Looks nice, and has a lot of neat problems for all the beginners out there, with explanatory videos to accompany them. Check the site out!

But, habitually yours is going to take a short nap before taking his son to the daycare. (Damn, is it 1am again???) Ohh... btw. I was told I should be eating 10k's for breakfast, or something like that. I'll see how that goes, after all, I'm only 12k because of rank drift. Of course, if a 4dan tells you something like that there must be some truth to it. Maybe I'm not bad after all. ^^ See you soon, and have great games (gg) while waiting for the next update. Hopefully I can play soon too! Good night!
Looks like I need to buy more of them.)

It was basicly a success. I spent one hour teaching the basics of Go to one teenager (and a couple of others watching) at the Lahti Chess Club. That's all I really had time for before we left. But I could see he had really checked the game out, and even practiced it a bit before playing against me. We played on the 9x9 board with a 3 stone handicap. At the end count White beat the game by 21 moku. He showed great interest in the game so I told him to check out KGS. I hope I will be seeing him there one day.

Leo was with me and while we were waiting for people to show up we played our own little game. He's quite good already on the 9x9 board, although often times he loses concentration just before the endgame. This time he won by 10 moku, playing with a 4 stone handi. I'm so proud. Oh, and this was actually the second game today. The previous game we played was at noon in the childrens' play park near our home. I drew the board in the gravel and we used different leaves as our "stones". As it was quite a windy day, our "stones" wanted to fly away so we had to secure them with some sand. But it was a great game, and in the end Leo lost only by 11 moku. (I played the last three moves myself that time since he had troubles concentrating at the end.)

At the chess club, there was some more talk about setting up our own go club, and whether or not it would be a good idea to create it directly under the chess club or having it as its own separate entity. It would probably be a good thing to be able to use the same facilities as the chess club does though. But as a matter of fact, I'm not entirely sure how a club is started. I must have a look into it.

Oh, and as a side note. You might have noticed I haven't been playing in the ASR League or in a matter of fact anywhere the whole last month. It just happened that the course I took was a bit heavier I had thought, and I was tired all the time (maybe coming down with a flu or something). As an icing on the cake, my wife gave birth to a beautiful baby boy on September 21st, and after that everything has more or less been one big hassle after another. These are the joys of parenthood, again.

So, I'm probably still going to ask Stalkor to keep me on the league. after all there are people I want to play against on Gamma, and of course, I still want to reach 1k(/d?) sometime next year. I can only wish there's enough time to play though. ^^ But I will be seeing you soon, that's a promise! /ggAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14008282539099811016noreply@blogger.com0Lahti, Finland60.9825708 25.661640960.899301799999996 25.4281814 61.0658398 25.895100399999997tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2010218220024259085.post-38401513770620435292010-09-20T22:36:00.001+03:002010-09-20T22:37:21.522+03:00Went to visit the local chess club today.I just came back from a quick visit to the Lahti chess club. It was interesting. I hadn't planned on playing any games there, but I was soon invited to play in the ongoing tournament. I had only time for two games and I have to say the young guy who was scheduled to play me next was quite disappointed when I had to leave. I loved his (and the other players') enthusiasm though, it was a lot like with people who play go. Also found another fellow go player there. We exchanged email addresses and I promised to bring the board with me the next time I visit the club. Maybe I can spur some interest in the game there. I hope. There was even some talk of starting up a go club.

I haven't been playing go lately though, since I've been busy studying and as a trainee in a coffee shop. I'm hoping to catch up in the league though. Sadly I'm having second thoughts about starting up my own theme café, it looks like there's just too much legalities, paperwork, tax issues and general bureaucracy in the way of setting up a nice quiet place where people could just play, and where I could participate too. Now it seems I would probably get so drenched in other work that even the mere serving coffee or tea would suffer, not to mention trying to show or teach the rules of the game to those who'd like to learn it. I shudder even thinking of how it would affect my own games.

I'm thinking of changing strategy. If anyone has ideas or suggestions, please feel free to comment here. ^^ /ggAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14008282539099811016noreply@blogger.com0Lahti, Finland60.9825708 25.661640960.899301799999996 25.4281814 61.0658398 25.895100399999997tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2010218220024259085.post-51696488319006877672010-08-26T21:48:00.001+03:002010-11-13T00:24:14.068+02:00Chasing dreams and finding life between games.A lot has happened since my last post. I haven't played a lot of go these few weeks since I found myself studying Japanese again.

And boy do I have a lot of catching up to do
since I had last been on Smart.fm. I had almost forgotten the service, till I got an email telling me ardesh had started following me there. Btw. ardesh and I have lately been building up a vocabulary, a study goal for go terms there, it's called Go terminology. Smart.fm is a sort of a web-based social flashcard study app, somewhat similar to anki, a desktop app which I also have on my computer, and on my phone too. Japanese is a fun language, if you are interested in learning a new one I suggest try Japanese. Smart.fm and anki/ankidroid can prove useful in studying many languages and other interesting knowledge too. ^^

I also just took the hygiene card course that's required if you want to work in a cafeteria, or to run one. Passed it with flying colors too and thus attained a permit to work in food industry. But still, it sort of raised some questions and doubts about me fitting in with that kind of work. Health issues mainly. I hadn't thought how much it would require dealing with strong detergents and almost constant hand washing. This makes me worry about my skin for it's almost certain to dry up and crack. Well, if it starts acting up I will need to find something else to go on about, right? ;)

So I've been away from KGS and the ASR League for a while. I might still be able to keep myself in the top 14 of Gamma II until stalkor splits the rest into Delta again. Whenever I've been on KGS lately, although being very fond of the chinese fuseki, I've been trying out new stuff. Still have some ideas on my mind I'd like to try. Hmm... I also installed the anDGS client for the Dragon Go Server on my phone a while ago, but I am still a bit hesitant about trying it out online. I think that's a weird feeling but I just can't shake it.

Anyway, tomorrow is another busy day, and I have an appointment for an interview for another course, this time it's a hotel and catering course that should have something to give me insight and knowhow for establishing the café. I think I also need a place to get some practice from. So now that I'm licensed to work in café's I'll most likely begin asking places for a trainee's spot too.

So it seems that I still need to learn things, on and off the goban. This is life after all. Now, I think I'm a bit too tired today to try playing a game, but maybe tomorrow, when all the dust has settled will I play again. I hope I can see you then! ^^ Have nice games!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14008282539099811016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2010218220024259085.post-20092366425443027622010-08-08T12:14:00.001+03:002010-08-08T12:15:57.547+03:00Humility in a game.First I would like to apologize to JachUGAN for being such a spoil sport, presumptuous in my play and in my attitude last night. I could hardly sleep last night because I had to reflect on our last game. It was supposed to be a friendly game, but turned out I was not being friendly enough. I was perhaps feeling too strong for my own good. Smugness overcame me and I forgot to watch the game, instead I started boasting with my insufficient skills. I should have known better. Most of my game till that point was decided by luck, not skill, and it should have rang some bells to be extra cautious instead of being so cocky.

"Ninja skills" was the term Jach described my intrusion. I take it as a compliment, but I guess it was strategically badly implemented. I should have waited for a few moves, maybe secure the lower board before attacking. Doing so without proper backup is just arrogant and stupid. I have no excuse.

After the blunder I was desperately trying to rescue what I could. But the game was already set. All the power I felt I had, had slipped from my fingers. And I started making awful, awful mistakes which I had to undo time and time again. Thank goodness it was not a league, tournament or a ranked game.

Otherwise, it was a pretty good game, my understanding of the initial fuseki is getting better, and I can already give some good fight to 10kyu players. Maybe I'll be SDK soon.

Here's the game, this time unedited so you can see all my mistakes, stupidity and arrogance in full:

All that said, I think I've learned a valuable lesson here. Go teaches humility in a way I really didn't envision. Very educational stuff, and I bet it could be beneficial to all mankind if this game was introduced to as many kids as possible, just to teach them this same lesson.

Now that I got this off my heart, I am looking forward for more games against JachUGAN. Good game!

Fatherly duties await, so I'll be off now. See you soon! ^^ /ggAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14008282539099811016noreply@blogger.com0
